I was thumbing through the book-Epee2.0, The Birth of the New Fencing Paradigm and came across a quote from an eastern philosopher, Sun-tzu (He lived a few hundred years or so ago) . For those of you that know me know how much I like to use zen like philosophy in my coaching, this quote caught my attention. Sun-tzu said. "In antiquity those that excelled in warfare first made themselves unconquerable in order to await (the moment when) the enemy could be conquered. "Being unconquerable lies with yourself; being conquerable lies with the enemy. Thus one who excels in warfare is able to make one self unconquerable, but can not necessarily cause the enemy to be conquerable. Thus it is said a strategy for conquering the enemy can be know but yet not possible to implement." With this thought in mind it reminded me of what we cover in every class-Technique, Tactics, and Timing. Just something to contemplate the next time you step onto the Piste and face your opponent. Till next time-David M.
